Kitten Care Memo
A few tips on keeping your pet.
Need to buy:
1. Food and water bowls 2-3 pieces (not plastic)
2. Food. We recommend buying the feed used in the cattery. Later you will be able to transfer the kitten to another food, but for the first month in a new home, we recommend using the food that the breeder uses. You should switch to a new feed within a couple of weeks, adding new food to the old one gradually. It is advisable to consult with the breeder. We are always happy to answer your questions.
- We DO NOT RECOMMEND using low-quality feed, we recommend using only super-premium and holistic feed.
3. The sphynx should have clean drinking water (filtered or bottled) available around the clock.
4. Toilet tray. We really love closed box litter houses, and we use them. They are durable, comfortable, perfectly detain the smell and keep the floors clean of filler. You can also purchase a regular box litter for filler, making sure that its dimensions are suitable for the size of an adult animal. The kitten grows very fast, and a small box litter may well not suit him. The sides of such a box litter should be high enough so that the filler does not fly around the room. So that the kitten does not carry the filler on its paws, you can buy a box litter mat and put it on the way out.
5. Filler. We recommend buying a filler used in the cattery. Later you will be able to transfer the kitten to another filler, but for the first month in the new house we recommend using the filler that the breeder uses.
6. Scratching post. The higher, the better! The cat should be able to stretch out to its full height when it comes to scratching its claws.
7. A house or a cot for a cat, where her place will be.
8. Toys - balls, mice, flywheels...
9. Box for transportation. For a sphynx kitten, it is advisable to buy a closed fabric box or bag to avoid drafts. Wearing a sphinx in a plastic box in the cold season is UNACCEPTABLE! Special attention should be paid to the quality of the transport bag.
When buying a box, you should pay attention:
- on her size (the kitten will grow up quickly and a small bag will not fit him);
- on its ability to withstand the weight of an adult animal (an adult cat weighs 5-6 kg on average, and more "weighty specimens" are possible).
Well, there! We have almost everything ready, now the most pleasant thing remains - let's go pick up the kitten!
Adaptation in a new home:
The minimum period of adaptation is considered to be the first 14 days of the animal's stay in a new home. Depending on the individual characteristics of each animal, the adaptation period can last up to one month.
During the adaptation period, it is necessary to give the kitten the opportunity to settle into a new home. Show the kitten where the toilet is installed for him, where the bowls with food and water are located, as well as where his place is. In the first day after moving to a new house, the kitten needs to be reminded where his new toilet is located.
A kitten is a living being for which no 100% guarantee can be given that in a stressful situation, such as the transfer, relocation (transportation) of an animal to a new home, failures with the health of the transferred kitten are possible. If the Buyer has another animal, it is recommended to keep the kitten in a 14-day quarantine.
During the adaptation period, it is necessary to strictly adhere to the recommendations given by the breeder. If non-standard situations arise, or if there is no understanding of how to react to the behavior of a kitten, it is necessary to seek recommendations from the breeder.
This is not a toy, but a live cat child, requiring a lot of attention, care and love, however, like all kids. He may be sad, lonely, scared the first days in a new place. He will cry and call his family. Try to pay more attention to him in these first difficult days, do not scold, talk to him more often, caress him. A kitten usually remembers its name almost immediately, the main thing is to call it one nickname all the time and at first associate it with feeding, petting and other pleasant moments. Try not to allow small children to the kitten, who can cause him unintentional harm, you can not give too much to carry him in your arms, squeeze. Relationships with a cat from the very first days should be built primarily on mutual respect, remember that these animals value their independence and dignity very much, are proud, noble and fair, do not tolerate violence, orders and rudeness, perfectly appreciate a kind and respectful attitude towards themselves and give your love a hundredfold.
Sphynx are special cats, they really understand what they are told. And they like to chat themselves. Be prepared that your new pet will follow you around and pester you with conversations, ask for your hands and demand attention and affection.
Like any other, a kitten can make a mistake, but remember: you can't scream, you can't hit and scare. The most common conflicts with a cat or a cat arise in the toilet question. Cats are very clean and demand the same from their owners. The cat's toilet should always be washed or there should be a clean filler in it. Most often, kittens already know how to go to a certain place, they learn this from their mother, and the new owners just need to show where the toilet is. Do not be afraid of the first "misses" by the box litter - the kitten is too busy exploring a new world, it can get lost, get lost, forget where the toilet is. In no case should you grab him by the scruff of the neck, poke his nose into a puddle or a pile and drag him to the toilet with menacing cries: the kitten will not understand anything, only get scared, and can link his fear not with a puddle on the floor, but with the toilet, where he was so rudely poked. Dip a piece of paper in a puddle, put it in the cat's toilet and put the kitten there, he will guess everything himself. The main thing is to do everything calmly, without shouting and anger. Help the baby. Several times a day, take the kitten to the tray, take his paw, make a digging movement. Do not rush to throw away the used filler - solid waste can be removed immediately, and puddles for you will have almost no smell in the filler, leave them, so the kitten will remember faster. Often cats express their dissatisfaction with the behavior of the owner by suddenly refusing to go to the toilet, they begin to do their business anywhere, in the most unexpected and outrageous places. The owner should first of all understand himself - does he offend the cat, does he monitor the cleanliness of the toilet, etc. If possible, first limit the space of the animal's stay, so that it would not be far to the toilet, as he gets used to it, open the space further. It may take a couple of hours. But it will be easier for the baby to get used to it. And start his acquaintance with the apartment with his toilet. Drop off the kitten in his stall. And he will always be able to return to the starting point.
After the kitten feels at home, it will be possible to bathe him.
Hygiene.
Sphynx tend to sweat and get dirty. Bathing a kitten is recommended at least once a month, but not more than once a week. If suddenly your pet has become dirty in just a couple of days, this is a signal of health problems. It can be fatty food, unsuitable food or stress. You need to bathe the cat in warm water (keep in mind that the temperature of the animal is higher than human). It is better to do this in a container, and not under the shower, because the noise of the water can scare the pet. Throw him toys, distract him. Rinse and lather with a special shampoo for hairless cats or baby shampoo (it does not pinch the eyes, gentle). Use a baby soft washcloth – it will be difficult to wipe off the plaque with your hands.
Also, once a week it is necessary to carry out the following hygiene procedures:
- ear cleaning - more information about the procedure can be found in a specially dedicated article - "Learning to clean the ears of cats"
- the cutting of claws is made by a special device called "gerilyatinka". The kitten's claws should be trimmed only at a distance of 2 mm from the sharp edge of the nail.
- wipe with baby wipes as needed.
Precautions:
1. Kittens and adult cats should be restricted from open spaces, such as: open windows, open balcony, or open doors to the entrance, or to the street.
2. To preserve the safety of the kitten, it is necessary to use grids on the "anti-cats" windows, or to control the closing of windows, as well as use the window opening lock regulator.
3. It is necessary to protect the kitten from any hot and heating devices, such as an iron, incandescent devices, electric or gas stove.
4. Also, in order to avoid swallowing small objects by the kitten, it is necessary to ensure that the animal does not have access to such objects.
Medical care:
Even if the kitten does not go outside, it can pick up ear mites and viruses that "come" to our apartments on shoes, dog paws, etc. For prevention, the animal needs to be given anthelmintic 3-4 times a year. Once a year, it is necessary to carry out an annual vaccination + rabies vaccination once every three years.
Carefully observe your pet and notice any changes in appearance, faces, eyes, temperament. This will help to stop the disease, if it decides to manifest itself.
If there are any diseases in the kitten, or alarming symptoms, it is necessary to contact the breeder, and if necessary, contact the veterinary service for advice.
The Buyer's decision to get a kitten into his own home should be conscious, balanced and coordinated with family members, neighbors, relatives, if necessary. If there are other animals in the house, the Buyer should consider the location of the animals for the period of adaptation. The buyer should be aware that he takes responsibility for the adaptation of the received kitten in his house (with the advisory support of the Breeder).
